Flashpoint: The Canterbury Cricket

Mike Carlin and Rags Morales
"The Scoundrel's Tale:" While I cannot really give any history on much of the issue, I can point out that Etrigan the Demon is here. The rest? Who knows...

Summary: We open to the heroes of the story- Etrigan the Demon, Godiva- a hair based character, Mrs. Hyde- split personality hero/villain, and Jinny Greenteeth, what appears to be an imp/witch- fighting the Amazons along a path to Canterbury and losing when our title character appears. After defeating the Amazon horde there, the group makes camp and Etrigan and Jinny discuss quitting the quest, and the Cricket chastises them for allowing all of the great art and literature die under the Amazon's rule. They decide to discuss how they all got to be there, with Cricket going first. He tells the tale of Jeremy Chriqui (HA! I GET IT, DC), a ne'r do well college student who was more interested in women and money than anything else. When the Amazons invade, Jeremy leaves his friends behind and seeks safety in a church, the Canterbury Cathedral. A group of Amazons follow him and are about to execute him when there is a flash and the church, and Amazons are in pieces around him. Finding a box nearby, he opens it, and finds a skull inside. Inside the skull though is a cricket, and upon touching it, the last remaining foundation of the church collapses on top of him. He climbs out, changed into the Cricket, with holy armor. Yes, that's right... we have a hero who is an insect and is powered by God. Etrigan points out that they should never touch each other, lest they would cancel each other out, and who knows where they'd end up. Back to his story, Cricket discusses how he joined forces with other characters- Jaime Reyes-the Blue Beetle, Queen Bee, Firefly, and the Cockroach- to form the Ambush Bugs (HA, YOU DC GUYS ARE HILARIOUS) and take out the Amazons. However, one night everything went wrong and the entire team was killed- Firefly was stabbed, Queen Bee was decapitated with a shield, the Cockroach was crushed, and poor Blue Beetle was shot in the head (REALLY?). The Cricket managed to escape, only by sheer luck. As his story ends, Jinny stands up to apologize for wanting to quit, and she is incinerated by Amazon fire. The rest escape into the woods. See, this is the story I was expecting out of Lois Lane and the Resistance, and apparently, that's where they are going to appear again. I was hoping someone else would show up, like he always does when England is in trouble... What do you say, Doctor... Joining with the Cricket?

Whatever... I bet Ten(nant) would have done it...

Highs: Very interesting story, and its very well written and paced. Cricket is new, but already feel at home. Even the art is good.

Lows: I would love to know more about the other members of the Resistance... they all, except Etrigan seem very dry and cardboard

Verdict: A. Shame its just a one-shot comic. This was by and far the best Flashpoint this week, and I really hope the Cricket remains a part of continuity. Guess we will see how everything holds over with their second issues this week.
